Kelvey Physio: Strong Foundations, Enduring Health. What It Means to Me.
Health and wellness have always been central to my life. Even as a kid, I was eager to grow stronger. I can still see myself back in elementary school, down in my parents basement, bench pressing and adding just a couple of pounds every day. The idea of being able to do consistent work, followed by near immediate strength gains, was fun and addicting to me. By high school, my routine expanded. I was in the Dartmouth Sportsplex weight room every day, doing full-body workouts while playing several team sports and practicing all the martial arts I could. My focus was simple: to get as big and strong as possible.
As I grew older, my goals evolved. I shifted from focusing purely on strength to balancing it with lean muscle and mobility. I became obsessed with the idea of movement, especially as it pertained to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I began to ask myself, and continue to ask, “How can I move most efficiently, stay flexible, and avoid injury?" I didn’t just want to be strong; I wanted to move well and stay healthy. The more I learned about my body, the more I realized that real health isn’t about how much weight you can lift or how shredded you are… it’s about balancing strength, mobility, endurance, and, most importantly, sustainability.
These thoughts no doubt influenced my path of education. In 2016, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, and in 2019 I completed my Master of Science in Physiotherapy, both from Dalhousie University. For the last decade, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been the compass guiding my health journey. It’s the perfect blend of physical and mental challenge, and it provides an outlet to apply everything I know about strength, endurance, and mobility. To stay on the mats as long as possible, I have to keep my cardio up, maintain my strength, work on flexibility, and take care of my joints and overall health. This also means managing my nutrition, ensuring I take enough rest, and staying mindful of my body’s limits and potential.
Through my journey evolving as a physiotherapist, teaching yoga, strength training, and trying every activity that has come my way, I’ve gained a unique perspective on health and longevity. My focus isn’t just on helping clients recover from injuries it’s about giving them the tools to build strong movement foundations so they can have enduring health. I want all my clients to keep doing the things they love for as long as possible. Whether it’s running, playing sports, or rolling in Jiu-Jitsu, I want to help my clients move well, live well, and be strong, both physically and mentally, for as long as possible.
That’s why the motto “Strong Foundations, Enduring Health” captures everything my physiotherapy practice stands for. It’s about building strength in a sustainable way, so you can live a life of health, mobility, and longevity. I’m passionate about sharing this journey with others and helping them discover their own strength, whether recovering from an injury or simply looking to take their health to the next level.
I’m excited to support anyone who this appeals to, and together we’ll build the foundation for enduring health so you can keep doing what you love for as long as possible.
